The Hudson’s Detroit development marks one of the most ambitious construction projects in the city’s recent history. Built on the former site of the iconic J.L. Hudson’s department store, the $1 billion mixed-use development covers approximately 1.5 million square feet.
To ensure fire safety during construction, the Orama Group’s innovative technology developed by Ramtech, were the ideal choice. The project represents both a symbolic and physical revival of downtown Detroit, transforming a site that had stood vacant for more than two decades.
The Challenge of Large Multi-Storey Buildings
The Hudson Detroit development includes a 48-storey residential tower, a 12-storey office building, luxury hotel accommodation, and a range of retail spaces. Ensuring safety on a project of this scale required careful planning and coordination. More than 350 trade professionals contributed over 2.6 million working hours, creating significant challenges around coordinating emergency procedures across 60 floors and a multi-level basement.
James Pecz, Vice President of Ramtech North America, explains: “Evacuating a project this size would have been extremely challenging without a coordinated system. The fact that all workers could receive the alarm at the same time was vital. With this approach in place, we felt confident and the workers felt safe.”
Because conventional methods, such as air horns, were not suitable for a high-rise construction site, the project team needed a solution that could alert every worker to an evacuation at the same time while enabling safety personnel to identify the precise location of an incident as it unfolded.

Clear audible alarms and high-visibility strobes ensured emergency alerts could be heard and seen across the site, while enabling workers to activate fire, evacuation or medical emergency notifications immediately.
